Clamps in water sports

In principle, two types of clamps are used for sailing: The curry clip or the Clamcleat rope clip. While the rope clamp consists of two fixed ribbed side walls, whose passage becomes narrower against the direction of pull, the curry clamp consists of two rotatable plastic or metal jaws mounted on parallel axes, between which a rope can be clamped. These jaws - which is why clamps are often called jaw clamps - are eccentrically shaped and pressed against each other by springs. To increase the clamping effect, their contact surfaces have a serrated profile. If the sailor guides a line through the curry clip, it is still easily movable in the direction of the sailor as the torsion springs give way. However, if the line is left out and a pulling force from the opposite direction - such as that of a sail - is exerted, the jaws clamp the line tight.

Curry clamps are usually used when sailing for sheet guidance or for fixing trim lines, as the lines are fixed firmly with the help of the clamps against slipping out, but at the same time can be released and quickly adjusted by simply throwing them upwards.

History of Curry Clamps

The Curry Clamp is a quick and easy to use clamp for trim lines and sheets on sailing boats. The eponym is Manfred Curry. The 899 in Munich born sailor, scientist and inventor with American passport never claimed this type of clamp as his invention. Curry had got to know the Klemme in the 1920s as the "bulldog jam cleat" in the USA, built it on his own ships and made it famous in Germany through numerous regatta successes.

Assortment

Over the years, more extras and accessories have been developed for KLemmen to provide even finer and lighter operation on board. For example, a guide eyelet or a shackle attached to the curry clip additionally secures the line. In addition there are clamps in the most different sizes and from different materials such as aluminum or Carbo composites.
