Carabiner for your ship

Origin of the karabiner

The actual name of the karabiner is Karabinerhaken and was intended to fasten the hunter's rifle - the karabiner - quickly and easily to the shoulder strap. This should ensure that the hunter does not have to hold the karabiner in his hand all the time, but only gets it released quickly and easily from the belt if necessary. In the 17th century, the first oval, conically shaped iron rings were forged by blacksmiths, with which soldiers, sailors, miners, etc. could hang themselves in safety loops.

Various shapes and materials

In general, carabiners are distinguished between normal carabiners and occlusive carabiners. The difference lies in the fact that the locking joint of locking carabiners is secured against unintentional opening by a lockable or screwable sleeve. This is particularly important for sports applications and safety uses. If the requirement is fast operation, the normal karabiners are advantageous, because they can be opened faster.

Uses

Nowadays, karabiners are specially manufactured for a wide variety of areas and requirements. Carabiners with very large openings to hook into the safety wires even easier and faster are used in climbing or offshore sailing. These carabiners are often also made of lightweight, dimensionally stable aluminium. In other areas, such as the fire brigade, round safety carabiners are the common solutions - made of heat-resistant stainless steel. If you look at sailing in particular, you will find carabiners in trapeze sailing, on towing lines, on safety lines in ocean sports, on traps for hooking on sails, on tarpaulins, on sheet systems and many other applications.
